LYNRED automotive digital twin enables FMVSS 127 and PAEB evaluation in Ansys AVxcelerate from Synopsys.

To help automotive developers address upcoming safety regulations, LYNRED now provides a sensor model of its automotive thermal sensor compatible with Ansys AVxcelerate Sensors software from Synopsys. This integration enables engineers to evaluate Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (PAEB) performance for FMVSS 127, but also new ADAS features and Autonomous vehicles through advanced simulation.

Addressing the Challenges of PAEB

The FMVSS 127 regulation requires pedestrian detection and automatic braking to operate both day and night, at high speeds, and with low-beam headlights. While current perception systems relying mainly on radar and visible-light cameras can perform well under certain conditions, they may also generate false positives or miss real hazards under degraded visibility.

These limitations can lead to the so-called “phantom braking” phenomenon (unexpected braking triggered by incorrectly detected obstacles) or, conversely, missed detections of pedestrians. Both situations represent potential safety risks that must be addressed as day and night PAEB systems become mandatory.

Thermal imaging provides an additional sensing modality that helps overcome these challenges by detecting heat signatures rather than relying solely on visible light. By complementing existing sensors such as cameras, radar, and lidar, thermal imaging sensing improves perception robustness in low-light or difficult visibility conditions.

From physics-based modeling to sensor output simulation through digital twin simulation

Evaluating new sensor modalities and their impact on system performance can be difficult when relying only on real-world testing. Physical tests are costly, time-consuming, and may not cover the full range of scenarios required. Furthermore, with FMVSS 127 coming into force in September 2029, simulation helps accelerate development cycles and enables the automotive industry to take wise ADAS sensor suite concept choice.

With AVxcelerate software, engineers can simulate realistic driving environments using a digital twin of the test track, scenarios, and environmental conditions. Combined with the first version of LYNRED automotive sensor digital twin, the platform allows developers to evaluate PAEB performance and explore edge cases, including situations that may lead to phantom braking, within a controlled virtual environment.

The sensor simulation software enables real-time simulation of multispectral sensors for scenario-based perception testing. From physics-based modeling to sensor output simulation, results can help developers to predict ADAS system & vehicle behavior earlier in the development cycle.

As a European leader mastering both the design and production of infrared detectors, LYNRED supports the automotive industry with high-performance, automotive-grade thermal sensing solutions that contribute to safer and more reliable perception systems. LYNRED is also compliant with the IATF 16949 automotive quality management standard, reinforcing its commitment to meeting the highest requirements of the automotive industry.
